LEBANESE FOOD Lebanon is often regarded to as the best place for the "hungry man", because of their delicious foods prepared in massive quantities! There's a Lebanese saying that goes like this, "If 10 people are going to be at the table, make enough for 20". This motto has many meanings, one being that it allows people to bring guests of their own, or that perhaps you find out last minute that the group who canceled earlier can now make it, or lastly because... the Lebanese are a hungry group of people!! Lebanese food is often seasoned with garlic and olive oil, and the ingredients are always fresh and local; the menu changes with the weather. Along the coasts of Lebanon, fish is a large part of the diet, whereas in the mountainous regions, chicken and beef are a large part of the diet.
Shawarmas!!
If you live in Ottawa, you know about the Shawarma, it's Lebanon's most famous meal (hummus runs a close second place!). Canadians love it because it is fast, cheap, filling, and healthy :)
The main ingredients in Shawarma are either beef or chicken, then an assortment of vegetables (tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, turnips, ect.) and last but not least...the garlic sauce that is the staple of the Shawarma! It makes me hungry just thinking about it....
Sweets
The Lebanese are known also for their buqlava sweets, filo dough with a sweet filling made of nuts, honey and other ingredients. It is a custom in Lebanon to bring buqlava sweets when invited over to someone's home, as it is rude to arrive empty handed!
